Hey,

When I try to launch BG, I can see the menu through a flickering black and white. The top half being white, and the lower half being black. I do see the menu, but when I click on 'start Baldur's Gate', all I get is 3/4th of the screen being white and the upper right being filled with a black box. I have tried disabling desktop themes etc. in compatibility mode, no cigar. I can only hear the sound. I see more people here have issues with black screens, but most of that seems to be related to intel graphics, and I am using a discrete AMD card.

For the record, I have disabled triple buffering, and vsync is off in Catalyst. My OS is Windows 7.

I've got the same graphics card as you, so far no issues. What version of the Catalyst drivers do you have?

I am using the latest drivers (12.11 Catalyst drivers)

    Bump.

I tried reinstalling the game, installing openal, messing with different settings in Catalyst, ticking different boxes in compatibility mode, starting the game through all the different installers, and still all I get is a black and white screen.

Do the logo movies play correctly for you? I am beginning to think that what is really going on here is it is trying to play one of the movies, but running into a codec issue.

Nothing plays correctly - it's not a codec issue, I am quite sure. The only thing I can see is the menu, and even that is underneath a flickering screen with a black and white screen. If I alt-enter, the menu is gone and all I see is the black and white bar. While I can see the menu I do get to see the pointer (the hand) and I am able to click one the option to start the game, after which both during the movie and beyond I have a screen that is 3/4th white and 1/4th black.

This is what worked for me:

    1. Run the game. At the white screen, do Alt+Enter to switch from full screen to windowed.
    2. Close the game.
    3. Open the game again. It should open in Windowed mode. If it looks like you're in, you can hit Alt+Enter to switch to full-screen and play your heart out.
    4. BEFORE QUITTING THE GAME, switch back to windowed mode, so it will start up in windowed mode again.

If this doesn't work, either post your specs here, or email support@beamdog.com.

I already tried alt-entering, quitting and starting again. Sadly, that leads to more of the same, only in windowed mode. Right now I am downloading and installing the game for the third time.

FYI, playing on the same machine using another user account and no issues...
Must be something somewhere in the account, no clue what...

@HeroicHamster @hairynose is your Windows machine set to US English as its default language? Do you have different characters in your username by chance?

edit: for that matter, @HeroicHamster if you make a new user profile, does that fix it for you?

Okay, I tried it with a different profile, and, indeed, like magic it suddenly works on that new profile. Any idea what could cause it not to work on my original profile? I had noticed that, even after uninstalling and reinstalling, and removing any folders I could find of Baldur's Gate my game would open in windowed mode like before I uninstalled it. Is there some place where corrupted settings could remain?

To answer your question, I have no funny symbols in my name and my OS language is US English.

Okay, I got it fixed, it was completely not what I expected. The problem was in MSI afterburner, I had to disable the overlay and also disable the monitoring of framerates. Really weird :S

    Thanks for the help.

lol nice, i also have msi afterburner running with the overlay and framerate monitor. Disabled them and all is fine, good find.

    @HeroicHamster : thank you !
MSI Afterburner was indeed the culprit for me.
