Good problems being had

I really don't think the developers or anyone else in the marketplace expected this kind of rush for the game. Computer games at least over the past few years have been more based on fancy graphics and less on intricate storylines. This game getting downloaded so abundantly only goes to show how awfully dumb most people in the gaming industry are in not recognizing what the role playing population wants. The fact that so many people are downloading this game right now is only a good thing

I think it's silly not to expect a zero-hour flood, since games have been experiencing it for a while now.

However, there is also the sheer economics of it: it makes no sense to cut into your profitability to beef up server loads for a rush that will last 24 hours or less. So devs are put in a bad spot where it is economically advantageous for them to look bad, and there's simply no easy way to explain that to most fans.

Anyhow, just speculation on my part, of course.
