Ehh, this is pretty subjective. I LOATHE Wild Magic because I always seem to get negative side effects, and I hate the unpredictability of it all. Neera herself is pretty adorkable and I like her and her story personally, but her romance just does not cater to my tastes.
At low levels, the wild mage's tradeoff is basically an extra spell per level for a 5% chance of random effects that probably amount to failure. At her maximum BG1 level, that 5% chance is approximately one spell per day if you use all of your slots - quite a bit less than the five extra spell slots you gained. Neera is stronger than a single-classed generalist mage, even at low levels.
But then, there aren't any single-classed generalist mages you can recruit as companions, in either BG1 or BG2. Neera has mediocre stats; 17 Int is standard for recruitable mages, and her 14 Con doesn't grant any HP. She's OK, but she doesn't stand out from the pack; any of the specialist mages in BG1 will match her for overall usefulness.
In my current run, I brought her along only for her quest, using a PC dragon disciple and a dual-classed Imoen for my mage needs otherwise. Neera got off one wild surge: she fired a color spray backward. Thankfully, my party was too high a level to be affected.
Neera can be a solid mage for the party. Obviously can't touch Baeloth or Edwin, but is still good and she is CN so she'll roll with most anything. In BG2 she becomes extraordinarily strong.
Her romance is OK if you like romances in your game, I'm not a particular fan of romances, but I didn't hate it.
A lot of people feel they can justify her in a party of any alignment, because it's hard to sort out exactly what evils she's really committed, and she can be reformed through her romance.
Is she a bit of a cynical selfish misanthrope on a slow journey to being a better person, or is she a legit pathological killer and sadist in a doomsday cult? Hard to tell. The game gives you very little in terms of cold hard facts about her. Just a lot of hearsay. You can pretty much interpret her as you will, and your character can too.

I've never done her romance but the screen shots I've seen look weird and icky.

Her romance is my least favourite but some people seem to really like it
