Jerky Frame rate

Finally got the game downloaded, started it up and went straight into the tutorial just to see how things look and stuff. However my character moves around very slowly and jerky. I assume this might be a frame rate issue. I tried editing the baldur.ini but it seems the settings changes back when I load it back up again.
I also noticed how the music skips every time I select a new window to open when I create my character. Anyone else experiencing this issue?
I then tried to start the game itself, from what I can tell the intro movie was playing but the sound was skipping. I didn't wait for the screen to fill with whatever it was going to. I don't want to ruin it with a jerky, skipping version of it.
I'm hoping I'm not the only one who's had a similar experience. I'm a little gutted as I had 2 full days off which I was hoping to spend to playing, and not spending it troubleshooting.
If its any help, I'm running it on Windows 7. NeVidia GeForce 555M graphics card.
