Auto-update

Good examples are: Steam and Chrome.

As soon as new patch\dlc is out BGEE should install it automatically during the next launch and provide player with a change-log.

Hope @CameronTofer will find a way to implement this in BGEE.

What about mod/savegame compatibility? I'd rather not have risk an automatic update breaking a mod, and making a savegame unusable until the mod is updated.

    Don't use Chrome...

About updates: it's either beamdog, steam or a typical patch but any of those should be easy to do. (My favorite would be Steam) Maybe and option in game to check for updates could do the trick too.

Whaaa? Chrome is great! I've never ever run into a problem like what they're describing!

As for an auto-update feature, I agree with @wbouvy - if you imagine an auto-update feature with the current game (BG1 or BG2), can you imagine the incompatibilities introduced in regards to mods?

@wbouvy those are important matters, the save game compatibility. But, for years, all my games are up to date and none of those games ever made a save incompatible... So what I mean is maybe nowadays developers don't have to break that compatibility that often. Also about mods, modders usually update the mod to comply with the official release. But as I said not an automatic update but an option to update in the launcher would be good.
@nulspace I accept that, i just don't like that googleupdater.exe its my opinion... I don't like some types of software.

Potentially handy feature so long as post-release patches don't jeopardize mod compatibility. Right now, I see no reason why they should. However, I'm not expert in the field, so I'd like to keep an open mind until some who is in the know sheds some light on the matter ;-)

For my part, an updater from the menu sounds like the best option.
Click Update in the menu, the game checks the server if there's an update, then it asks you "Do you want to install v1.3?" and you click yes or no.

It leaves patching optional for the people who worry about savegame compatibility, or who enjoy a particular bug or non-feature (they excist), or in case of a bad patch, give you the option of not taking it.
It also leaves updates only one click away, without searching sites for patches and makes it easy for multiplayer games to get the same version.

Win-win, the way I see it.
