Stuck in tutorial before going to basement

Hello,
I seem to be stuck in the tutorial. I am in the room prior to going to the basement. There are two stairs, left and right, but neither will take me anywhere. I tried going to the stairs with a single character or all of them. Nothing happens. Ideas appreciated.

    Okay, you see the stairs on the left? There should be an opening under it, near the top of the room, that lets you go down.
