Game crashes after character creation

I am able to start the game but I can't see the introduction video. I am then able to create a character or select a premade one. Then, I can listen to and read the Candlekeep introduction paragraphs but just after, right before I actually start playing, the game crashes there every time.

Hopefully this gets fixed - eventually.

This is exactly the same problem that I am experiencing. I'm currently re-downloading it, though I don't have my hopes up on this one.

Kilrthrax, what's your PC/laptop specification, what operating system are you running etc? Give as much info as you can.

    Precisely the same issue here.
I'm running Windows 8 Consumer Preview, Intel Core i5 M450, nVidia GeFore 310M GT.
I've tried specifically setting the game to run with the discrete card and not the integrated, but still the same problem.

    EDIT: SOLVED
Problem fixed by using this solution in another thread for a slightly different problem (at least in high level description):

Alright, guys. Got it working. Find your Baldur application file. On my computer it was located at Program Files (x86)\Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition\Data\00766

Right click on Baldur. Select properties. Click on the compatibility tab.

Check the box to Run this program in compatibility mode for:
    Windows Vista Service Pack 1

In the same tab, check the box to Run this program as an administrator. Apply and exit.

    Double click Baldur.

Let me know if it worked for you like it did for me.

Worked for me. Many thanks to the poster in that thread.
I also made sure to add that .exe to nVidia's list of .exe's to run with the discrete card rather than the integrated.

    Now its time to play!

Same problem and same OS as TheLlamalizer here. My Win 8 preview is 32bits, I have a Core2Quad Q9550, ATI Radeon HD4800.

I tried moving the folder to c:\, running in admin mode, with every compatibility mode possible (it actually doesn't launch at all in Win 95 and Win98 modes), tried windowed and full screen, installed the OpenAL32.dll, tried to reduce color etc... and did this on both the BGEE.exe, and Baldurs.exe, together, and separately... and the game always crashes at the same point!

Please fix this Overhaul, we paid for this, we're not beta testing :)

    Running win8 64 bit, ati hd3850.
None of the above worked for me. Sollution was installing the latest ati video card drivers.

Thanks TheLlamalizer, but that didn't work for me.

As for my comp: Win 7 64 bit, Intel processor, 8gb ram, with a ATI Radeon HD 5570.

Don't work for me either, I have no integrated graphic processor anyway. And I have ATI latest drivers.

    Tried virtually everything:
    copied it to C:
    compatibility mode
    administrator rights
    640x480
even changed system language/region settings to united kingdom, as support suggested.
I EVEN REDOWNLOADED THIS PIECE OF #$^%$#....

Beamdog, i hope you know the next 5 dlc's are on your tab because of this epic F***-UP!!

    Exactly the same here.
    Windows 8 64 bits, intel cpu i7 870, ati radeon HD7970 :
crash / return to windows after char creation, intro speech : click crash. (but i can somewhat hear candlekeep sounds effects just before crashing)

I've tryed to copy my game installation and then launch the installer (wich insta install the game) on my laptop (windows 8 64 bits, nvidia 560M, intel i5 cpu)
    Exactly the same problem.

I tryed re downloading the game.... and it ain't changing anything.
Running in compatibility mode, admin rights etc... Nothing help

    Please do something.

I have the same problem... under win 7 and radeon graphic card... I've tried everything! Should it be a problem of Radeon graphic cards?

    Yeah, where are they???

Works fine on my laptop though, it runs Win Vista SP2, Ati Mobility. But still doesn't work on my desk computer even in Win Vista SP2 compatibility and up to date ATI drivers. I don't get the video before character creation either.

    EDIT :

I actually managed to get it to work!

I thought I had the latest ATI Drivers (at least, Steam was saying they were up to date), went to AMD/ATI's website and downloaded their latest software, this installed "ATI Catalyst" which I didn't have anymore having installed my lastest drivers through Steam.
    And now it works!

So for every ATI users experiencing the same crash, you should get this here, and install all components : http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

And shame on me for trusting Steam I guess...

I had the same issue. I solved it by reinstalling the correct video driver.
My problem was that I upgraded from win7 to win8, and my video drivers worked EVERYWHERE except with baldur's gate. I went to the AMD site and downloaded another video driver (the NON dotnet framework version, which I had) with the same version.
    Everything worked perfectly afterwards.
What gave it away for me was actually not being able to open catalyst control center.
