Login timeout after character select

Heya, hoping someone has some suggestions for this;
One of my players is having an issue where he can log in fine, reach character select, select a character, but then they sit at a black screen for about a minute and a half before being told that the server connection timed out.
We have a lot of custom content; before EE, this issue happened when the computer in question was not able to load all of the custom content quickly enough, and the server gave up on them after about 90 seconds. I thought that custom content was loaded in EE at character creation and not after, so I'm very confused.
Anyone have any ideas, or, know of any new INI options or NWNX plugins that allow for the server timeout to be extended to work around this issue?
