Black Pits PS4. wizards moving instead of casting spells

I've played through BG 1, so I know how to play. But playing black pits,and I'm trying to cast a spell (web, fireball,) and the character moves towards the enemy instead of casting the spell. The distance I'm trying to use it is within
the spell range. It's driving me nuts, and making me not want to continue.
Anyone have ideas on how to fix this?
