Waiting for information from server

I've been playing this game for years and I've never been able to connect to other peoples games, except on a local connection. I decided to try again after finally getting a friend to buy it. We always get stuck at 'waiting for information from server'. Direct connection attempts result in 'could not connect to game'.
Its disheartening to see there is still so much fiddliness to get something so simple to happen. Is the official line that they need to install hamachi? Because they dont want to install it. We've spent 3 hours trying to get it to work and they've given up. We're both running the same version.

You're crushing me folks, its so hard to get other people I know to play this game anyway.

    I was a little salty last night, sorry for the waffle.

    I'm looking for other people's solutions to the non-connection problem, after checking the versions, port forwarding and even trying a 1.3 rollback were all attempted.
