Game displays junk characters, crashes.

Like many people, I have been unable to get this thing to work. The most obvious problem I've noticed is that, in the intro and character creation screens, it displays junk characters over certain parts of the screen. For example, it is impossible to read the names of any of the pre-gen characters because the names are covered in junk characters. Also, the game crashes, usually a few steps into the character creation process. I've tried a number of the suggestions I've found here, including making adjustments to the NVIDIA control panel, loading it from the baldur.exe file, etc., but to no avail.
At one point, I did at least get to see the intro video. What I mostly noticed about it is that it was nowhere as good as the intro video of the original, non-enhanced game. At this point, it seems obvious to me that they have released a broken game. It does not work. Moreover, I can only assume that they knew full well that they were releasing a broken game.
Now, supposedly the problems are a result of the addition of 3-D acceleration to the game. Honestly, I don't care about 3-D acceleration. I thought the graphics of the original game were lovely. I wanted the new content: the new adventure and the new NPCs. That's what I paid for, but apparently I don't get it. I really feel like I've been ripped off, and that this so-called enhanced edition was just a con.
