Got less than max hp

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
So I was playing with a friend, he had max hp toggled but for some reason my shaman, and one or two characters ended up with less than max hp. I thought it may have been a con penalty at the time of level up but I don't recall getting that. Maybe a disease? I don't recall seeing the status though.
Anybody had this happen to them?

    You say he had max HP toggled, but did you? One person's settings will only apply to characters controlled by them.

    Damn, I thought the host decided the settings. Level 2 was max for some reason though. Just level 3 I gained less than max.

    Level 2 was maximum? Probably just random chance. On a shaman's d8 rolls, you have nearly a 1/4 chance of rolling an 8. (Hit point rolls are weighted toward higher outcomes; you actually roll twice and take the higher one.)
