[Request] Add more class specific items to BGEE

TanthalasTanthalas Member Posts: 6,738
This is probably something in low demand, but I'd like to see what people think about this.

I think the game could use some more class specific items.

I'm not sure if the original BG1 even had Bard instruments (I confess, I never used Bards much). I also don't recall Rangers having any specific equipment either. Off the top of my head, I only recall there being some Thief only armor and I guess you could also say that Robes were restricted to Mages, and there were several rings that only Mages or Clerics and Druids could use.

I'm not asking for anything major, this is BGEE after all, so no Montolio's Cloaks for low level Rangers, but it would be nice if they could add some reasonably useful items for specific classes with a nifty feature related to their class and a tiny bit of lore in the item description. For example, since BGEE will actually have kits this time around, there could be a Ranger only leather armor added to the game, similar to the Thief only armor that already is in the game. Or maybe just a Ring of Protection +1 that had the additional effect of letting the Ranger cast an Animal Summoning spell once per day.

Just little nifty stuff like this, nothing major.

Note: Had to split my initial post to be able to post the discussion thread.

Good idea. While class specific items prima facie appear limiting, in fact they show that the game has depth. It shows that the world isn't just a randomly generated mish-mash, but that items are there for a reason, and if you can't use one because you don't have the right character to use it, then tough. I know it's strange but I like the feeling that the world isn't built specifically for my character, my character is just a person in it, along with many others.

Yep I agree. It helps add diversity to the classes which is always good :) As long as nothing is OP then I'm all in favour.

    I totally agree.
I'd say that one of the reason it's difficult to start playing as a mage is the lack of protective equipment (added to the generally low hit points...) when you're low level.
When you're playing a mage/thief, afair, you have to take away your armour to be able to cast any spell...

I agree, just not too many of them.

There is, by the way, one harp for bards sold at Ulgoth's Beard that dominates enemies, but thats all for them.

I think this is a great idea. Without race/class specific items, magic items just get to powerful. I would love to see a belt that only a halfling could wear, or boots fashioned for a half-orc.

i think what they should do is add the ring of danger sense and the ring of pick pockets, for the thieves, because half the thieves and bg 1 cant even hit 100 % find traps and 90 % open locks if you place every single point on them starting at level 1, which is annoying as hell, like montaron, he's pretty decent with a bow when you finally get to profientcies on bow, but once he has 100 % find traps, he can only reach like 75/80 % open locks and thats placing everything on those 2 not being able to improve the other 2 ( but i guess you never need to do stealth on anything thief since the boots of stealth and shadow armor give +50 %) but the thing is in the bg II engine there is going to be more thief abilities ( 7 instead of 4) and the boots of stealth and shadow armore, are going to go towards 2 abilities and be around 30/20 % so those 2 rings and maybe even the mits of pick pocketing would be a nice addition as well, but then again there will be an XP cap increase, so maybe it might be allright in the end mayhaps?

You always have the possibility of keeping several thieves in your party if you want to excel at all the thief abilities
