Editing dialog.tlk without messing up text

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
I recently tried editing dialog.tlk with Notepad++. It seemed easy enough, but most dialog is now messed up in the game (e.g. cut off or not visible). It seems that adding any text shifts all the other text below, screwing everything up.

I found out about Near Infinity, but I have *zero* clue how to even get it running (the instructions are completely opaque to me).

Is there a straightforward way to edit dialogue?
