GUI

GUI:
Current behavior: low resolution, low quality, blurry, huge (especially the text window).
Expected behavior: good quality, not blurry, less intrusive.

Comp: Win7 x64, GTX 460, 1680x1050

Considering this is supposed to be an EE and iirc the UI was one of the reasons you postponed the launch the current quality of the UI can't be the intentional.

I booted up a vanilla version of BG2 with the widescreen mod and compared.
BG2w is with widescreen mod, BG2 is without widescreen mod.

BG2w (1680x1050): http://i.imgur.com/pCaFn.jpg
BG2w (1280x960): http://i.imgur.com/4vNR0.jpg
BG2w (1280x800): http://i.imgur.com/8cRxT.jpg
BG2 (1024x768): http://i.imgur.com/gWNpJ.jpg
BG2 (800x600): http://i.imgur.com/3vSLJ.jpg

The quality looks the same as BG2 (at 1024x768), using the mod that gives a higher resolution gives an illusion of better quality, smaller icons, more crisp

@Freche I doubt they would use a GUI which is at base poor. I think upscaling it to multiple screen resolutions is what does it.

Really has must be fixed regardless.

Err, the size of the UI is as it should be, as far as I know. It scales with resolution, instead of having the horrible microscopic non centered buttons that give you a mighty headache from Widescreen mod...

Well I think there should be an option at least to down scale the GUI as I agree it is a little on the large size.

@Balquo : well, the Graphics option is quite empty for the moment ;)

But I believe thoroughly it was done mostly for the tablet versions. I mean, imagine Widescreen mod sized buttons on that! It's a good thing they improved the "tick" buttons to bigger stones (they also look shiny and fancy personally)

Truly, as long as there is an OPTION to pick the GUI's size, I have no problem. But don't force us to have a small one, I want to smack my head every time I use Widescreen and that on 720p!

The blurriness is bad and needs to be improved, but the GUI scaling is as intended.

Well, scale is the least issue so that is fine.
Though I wouldn't mind a reduction to ~80% of current scale (at least for 1680x1050).

    reduced to 80%: http://i.imgur.com/bbax1.jpg
(the reduction was done with PS)

The blurriness seems to be a result of the GUI scaling though. It looks like they just made the GUI for 1 resolution and then artificially scaled the rest, creating the same effect you have when zooming in on lower pixel jpgs for example.

The blurry GUI is bothering me as well. Also the GUI is taking up way too much space on a 1920x1080 monitor.
Considering that the tablet version (ie. iPad) of BGEE is compiled seperately from the PC , surely it's possible to compile the PC version with better looking GUI - eg. you don't have to use the same low quality GUI on both versions.
Alas', I wonder what BGEE will look like on the iPad's retina display, that has a huge resolution. If the same low quality GUI is used there, it will look awful... :S

It's obvious they made the GUI at tablet resolution and then just upscaled. Hah, you thought this was a PC game? Ugly, ugly work.

The problem are the buttons on the left. I have no problem with the blue/golden color contrast, but the buttons are just so low resolution.

Since PC and tablets are not the same quality wise, if there would be a change of GUI icons for the PC version, that would take away the point which is bothering me the most :)

@sea Exactly what i was guessing too. But i would even say the whole PC EE is a direct copy from the Tablet Version, the only change is the core, which is necessary to run it on normal pc systems.

That move was not the wisest since it created not only graphical problems, but instead it screwed also the technical part up.

Would have been more wise if they would have modified the game first for Windows and afterwards "downgrading" it for tablet use, not the opposite.

Seems more and more like "Lets port it to tablet and then back to PC!"

If the bif editors that were used for original Infinity games still works with BGEE, someone should change the horrible blue backgrounds with some close to the original for several standard resolutions, so that the game would not upscale them.

That's exactly what it is. Its like you make a port of a console game for a PC. The only difference is, that Baldur's Gate was NEVER a console game. And exactly that fact is such a big obstacle and the troubles we exerience right now will not be the only ones. it is like a self sustaining system. Or like a Hydra. Cut down one Head and 2 ones are growing.

That 80% looks pretty good sized. In addition, use the same sharpening filter used in the game graphics and I'm perfectly fine with the GUI.

That sounds like a solution which i could perfectly live with :)
