Timing for Black Pits

When should the Black Pits be played? After or before completing the main campaign? I will import/export in and out to transfer my player character.

    Can you even do that? I thought you always started at level 1 anyway, so the timing shouldn't matter.

    I was able to import a character I generated from the main campaign into the Black Pits. However, that was a newly generated character with no exp and no items. I noticed that the starter staff was replaced with a club. So I'm not sure.
