Player Character's range of sight?

I'm playing a character with mostly ranged attacks. I've noticed that my character frequently stops attacking when there are ranged enemies that are still attacking her. As a player, I can see them fine, but my character will need to be manually prompted to continue attacking. Perhaps I haven't noticed before, but is it a standard feature that the player character's range of sight is considerably less than enemies?

I haven't used henchmen yet, but I'm remembering that they'd attack enemies from a pretty good range. Is this still the case? Or do henchmen also have smaller ranges of sight now?

It's intentional to stop your character auto attacking a monster from the other side of an area when you might not have intended to/they weren't even involve in the combat yet.

My recollection is that it's "always been that way".
