Do I still need to LAN this?

Hey, sorry about the laziness, but I've been out awhile. I read that there had been huge improvements to MP. Is LAN/Hamachi with an IPv4 address still the way to go, or is MP up and running now? I'm setting up a game with some of my students and would like as few hiccups as possible.
