What happened to Shandalar

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
After clearing all the durlag tower quests, I realized that the cult used shalandalar's home as their base. Is shalandar a member of the cult or did they kill him and take over his house ?

    are they even the same person though. the game shows him as good and innocent so i doubt that

    i just checked up the forgotten realms wiki and this isn't what actually happened, but it was a neat hypothesis though :)

    you'd likely appreciate how several vampires in bg2 are people you first kill in bg1
