Portrait oddity

Up to date Steam version of BG:EE with SoD. No mods.

The file is a 210x330x24 bitmap. It works on the record screen, it works on the "create party" screen, but it does not work when I venture forth, on the top right. The other similar portrait files work just fine though. They're named mal000.bmp mal001.bmp etc. I tried to remove all other custom portraits, still doesn't work.

I'm at wits' end lol. Screenshots follow:

As you probably know, problems can occur as a result of the way portraits are named, e.g. where names include capital letters. I've found those problems can occur even after you've changed the name in the portraits folder. To get round those I move the portrait file to another folder and change the name there, before moving it back again. If your file was originally named something else you could try moving it out and back into the portraits folder to see if that will help.

A character has two portrait slots. There's a large one for the character sheet, and a smaller one for the sidebar. All of the standard portraits are named *****L (large), *****M (medium), and *****S (small); they normally get assigned the L and M portraits. In your case, the large portrait slot is your chosen picture, and the small portrait slot is unassigned.

Now, if you create variants of your pictures to follow this naming convention, just dumping them in your "portraits" folder might still not be enough. Properly inserting them in so that they only show up for the intended gender and different sizes get assigned ... that requires some modding techniques.

I have a bunch of portraits dumped in that folder myself; I generally use a save-editing tool (EEKeeper) to correct the portraits after character creation anyway, because navigating those lists is too messy.

In the EE (unlike vanilla) you can select a single picture that the game resizes for different purposes. Unless you want to use a different picture for different purposes you shouldn't need to worry about using L, M and S in names or modding.

I agree though that using EEKeeper can be helpful - particularly if you have a very large selection of portraits, scrolling through those in the game is a bit unwieldy.
