Don't die wondering - kill the kill screen!

I've just been taking on the Twisted Rune (again) at a rather lowly level (again) and keep getting insta-killed (again and again and again) because I can't see which attack is getting through my numerous defences - and all thanks to that bloody kill screen not giving me a chance to read the combat log! Why can't the game just freeze instead?

P.S. I'm not holding my breath on this - just putting it out there in case someone can think of a workaround.
