Screen Shaking effect

What causes this? I think there's a sound effect that goes with it, and it only happens in combat, but I haven't been able to figure it out. And the log at the bottom of the screen is very difficult to navigate through, usually it goes way too far and I basically play 'hold the button down for a random amount of time and hope for the best' several times.

    every time one of your characters scores a critical hit the screen shakes

    if you find it annoying, you can go to your documents folder and open up the ini file in your bg folder ( it looks like a note pad file by default ) and then you need to find this line:

    SetPrivateProfileString('Game Options','Critical Hit Screen Shake','1')

    set that 1 to a 0 and your screen will no longer shake on a critical hit
