Debug Mode & Avatar Change

Loving the game so far; nostalgia's been a long time coming!

Thing is, I got into the habit of playing the BG series as nonstandard races like orcs or gnolls, using the 'cheat' of changing the character avatar/paperdoll/whatever-it's-called, in debug mode; I'm now interested in doing that again.

Trouble is, whenever I change the main character's avatar this way, it goes back to normal the moment I save and reload; not a problem I ever encountered before!

Anyone know a way to make it permanent, or am I stuck with manually changing it whenever I have to load a savegame?
