Graphical error and BG:EE stops working

So far I haven't been able to enjoy the rerelease of my old time favourite game....

The screen shows very weird graphics, making several buttons unreadable. Furthermore it keeps shutting down, I haven't even reached the class selection screen.
Any others experiencing this (dramatic) problem?

I noticed the thread on intel graphics, but I run a 2 year old pc with NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GS. I would be highly suprised if this is the cause of the problem...

    Yes, I have exactly the same problem. Half the buttons seem to display a string of random characters. I can open the game to the main menu, but if I try to start a new game or create a character past portrait selection, or open "Language" in the options menu, the game crashes.

    I have a 2 year old laptop with NVIDIA GeForce 9500M. It runs on Windows Vista.

    Edit: It seems that running the game in Windows 98 / Windows Me compatibility worked for me so far.
