Very high GPU usage when using Alternate Renderer in I.E. games

Game Version: 2.6.6
GPU: GTX970
OS: Windows 10

So far I've tried this in Icewind Dale and Baldur's gate 2. whenever I choose "Alternate Renderer" the game completely maxes out my graphics card and can barely run above 40 FPS when I set the FPS cap to 60 in baldur.lua

It isn't maxed out at 30 FPS but GPU usage is still way too high.

I have verified with MSI afterburner that the game is indeed using the GTX970 and not the integrated intel one, so that is not the problem.

The game does run really well with OpenGL, but I wanted to try some things out with DX9 and I'd rather figure out what the issue is when running these games with DX9. There is no way an old game like this running on DX9 should max out a GTX970 at around 40 fps.

The issue begins from the moment I launch the game. Doesn't matter whether I'm in the main menu or in game. GPU is use is excessive.
