How to record gameplay + audio?

I made a thread about this in general chat, but its getting buried among too many other threads.

I have tried using both MSI afterburner and Fraps:

1) In afterburner I can record sound by selecting 'Creative What U Hear' as my audio input channel, but the game locks up and freezes while it is recording.

2) Fraps is working fine for recording gameplay and the game carries on working while it records, but Fraps wont record any of the sound, I only get mute gameplay recordings.

Both BG Tutu and BG2 work flawlessly with these recording programs.

    I've been able to record both sound and video just fine with Fraps.

    What settings do you use to record the audio? Could you post a screenshot of your fraps video settings?
