Possible to use old saves?

Hi,
I tried grabbing a save from my old BG1 playthrough and copying the folder to the BGEE save folder. I also copied the portraits folder over.
So I start BGEE and the old save displays on the list of saves. However when I try to load it, the game crashes.
Any workaround for this? Anything I can do? I remember Trent wrote before that hopefully old saves would be compatible (

You cannot use BG1 saves in BG:EE.

I doubt that will be inherently possible - BGEE uses the rules from the second game (and probably only as a base) so the savefiles would not be compatible.

You MAY be able to manually hack together a new savegame using Shadowkeeper (if it will open BGEE savegames), but I doubt you'll have much luck there.
