How do you set up a multiplayer game?

First time BG player here and I'm really confused as to how to set up a multiplayer game. Do I have to be in the game before anyone can connect? Is there a guide I can follow?

    When either of us try connecting to one another, out client crashes after typing in the host name and clicking connect.
