UMD Skill Checks & Difficulty Settings

Arright, here's a fun one. So on Normal difficulty and below, scrolls do not require a UMD check to use. As long as you have enough UMD to bypass the class restriction for the scroll, you can cast it. On Hardcore and above, however, you have to pass a UMD check with a DC of 25+spell level. This issue has pretty much doomed my Swordflight character, a rogue who was very reliant on scrolls for defense.
I had forgotten about this, and changed my difficulty to Hardcore. Upon finding this was the effect, I switched back to Normal... but the UMD check remained. First encountered this in Swordflight, chapter 2, but on further testing it also happens in Hordes of the Underdark.
I've already tried setting difficulty to Normal, saving, and loading. Even tried adding a line to Swordflight's OnModuleLoad script that sets the X2_SWITCH_ENABLE_UMD_SCROLLS variable to false if the difficulty is Normal or lower, but no dice. Anyone able to suggest a fix or workaround?
