[HOW to Work with .MOS chapter images]

I working on something, mostly for myself, that could use some new image+text screens. The stlyle used for epilogue cars seems to just need a typical image file, of the dimensions PC/NPC protraits use. The Chapter change screen inclueds a wide image, which is the style I want. But those all seem to be .MOS files.
I Can use NI to extract existing MOS to PNG so I can 'cean' the image for my oen and retain the GUI framework. My pondery is How do I convert my image BACK to .MOS? Do I even need to?
Come to think of it, both style are called by the same Textscreen script function. I wonder how it know which style is being used?
