Unable to leave through City Gates

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
I've got several quests outside the City but I can't leave through the City Gate area the way I normally do (I have played BG probably 20 times so I know I'm in the right area).

The exit doesn't even show on the Map, and all the outside locations are greyed out.

Any idea what to do here? Am I hooped?

    do you have mods installed? if so perhaps one of them became corrupted and made it so you cannot exit out of that area now

    Just to make sure- you are trying to exit through the northeast of the area, right?
