    Google is your friend!

    Warning NPC spoilers (except for the new ones)

    -the note for Quayle is no longer accurate: in EE the STR requirement for maces was lowered so he can use them.

    These stats are not complete. It says that Monty has proficiency in shortswords but it says nothing about slings. It states that Ajantis starts with TH sword specialization. But what about his remaining 2 points? where are they allocated when we first meet him?

    @Wened Kilroy gave you a now outdated NPC guide. It's for the original. The proficiencies changed VASTLY in BG:EE.

    I can't really help you with your question. The game's been out 2 days, I don't think anybody's made a comprehensive guide on such things yet. It'll probably be a while.

    Ajantis has 2 points in Bastard Swords. At least he did when I recruited him at level 2.

    Kivan:
    Halberds ++
    Longbow ++
    Two Weapon Fighting ++

    ... just checked. I don't understand how they decided to give him halberds instead of spears. He's a ranger, not a city watchman!

    Oh, and brave Sir Garrick:
    Crossbow +
    Short Sword +

    and Minsc:
    Two-Handed Swords ++
    Mace +
    Longbow +
    Two Weapon Style ++

    Not only that. Why give him "two weapon fighting" (i.e. dual wielding) when his favourite melee weapon is a halberd? Makes no sense at all.

    @Marric: so Coran remains "not exactly legal", and alpha as f*ck, good to know :)
    @Helias: they didn't, rangers get it automatically for free.

    I see. You shouldn't have told me. Now I can't change it with Shadowkeeper and feel good about it. ;)

    Yeah well, Halberds on a Ranger seems weird indeed. Archers carrying Halberds that's definitely weird.

    That's the reason I edited it out... ;) and because it got cluttered. But it really is a strange sight. Isn't dual-wielding ranger skills a 3E invention, anyway?

    Kivans halberds are even stranger when you remember that he wielded a spear in vanilla BG. Of course, he had polearms as skill, but who in his right mind would give an elven archer with a spear "halberds" in the new skillset?

    Just make your whole party and don't use NPCs :P

    I gave out incorrect information?

    *hangs head in shame*

    2 things. @Helias Rangers get 2 pips in two-weapon fighting automatically. Dunno if it's AD&D or just BG but it's been that way as far back as I remember. Also, NPCs recruited at higher levels have more proficiencies. So if you want the greatest amount of control over their development it's best to get them early. This is especially so for thieves as the game tends to spend their skill points... subomptimally (ie: pick pockets).

    I agree, thieves should be gotten early. The others: depends on how they have built their proficiencies. and how much lower their HP's are in comparison to the HP's they would have had if acquired early.

    Anyway, for the interested: here's a good table with the levels you can expect the different NPC's to have when you meet them, in relation to the level of the main character.

    The indicated proficiencies will most likely be incorrect, though, as they have been edited by the author and because they don't account for the kits and profinciencies introduced in bg2.
