What games should I play while I wait for BG3 release?

Hi! I'm new to DnD and BG3, and I want to get familiar with turn-based RPGs and their elements. Do you have any recommendations for me?

Obvious answer here are the original games. Baldurs Gate 1 and 2. But the pair of Icewind Dale games are very similar as well.

However, the current game most likely to be like BG3 imo is Divinity Original Sin 2. You don't have to play the first game in this case, as the storylines are only loosely related. Similar to BG3's relationship to 1 and 2.

If you want a modern CRPG that imo plays the most like the original BG games, I'd say the two Pathfinder games -- Pathfinder Kingmaker and Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous -- are the most similar while having a lot of nice modern touches.

The Pillars of Eternity games also play somewhat like the original BG games, they were clearly inspired by them. Dragon Age Origins is also a game made after Baldur's Gate that did very well imitating the style.

If you're interested in extremely old RPG's that were turn-based and were inspirations for the original Baldur's Gate, the games are called the "Gold Box" games. The original title is Pool of Radiance. Can be gotten very cheaply on GoG. They are very old however, so you'll have to accept their limitations.
