Jan very low lvl when recruited?

Hello all,

I am doing a run with some mods, and I went to recruit Jan. When he joined the party I lvl him up and he was... lvl 1 with 6 HP. I found that very strangle because my main is lvl 9. Is this a bug or something gone wrong with the mods?

I can't really bring him with me when he has 6 HP and my other characters have 72, 101, etc.

So, any advice?

Sounds like one of those "customize the NPC" mods, only the catch-up part didn't work properly. Without mods, Jan joins at level 7/8 with 30+7 HP and 161K XP, then gets an immediate trigger increasing his XP to 250K, 500K, 750K, 1000K, or 1250K if the protagonist has exceeded those thresholds.

Since, clearly, he's supposed to catch up to the party, you should be fine using the cheat console to grant him some XP. Select only Jan, bring up that console, type in an appropriate number (about as much XP as your protagonist has), and hit the button to set his XP total.

Yeah, that is my guess. I lvl him up when I got him to lvl 1, and then used EE Keeper, gave him 30+7, 7lvl illusionist, 8lvl thief and 161100k xp points. When I loaded the game his stats looked normal. Is that ok I guess?

It looks like rather than leveling him up in-game, you just edited the save to increase his level. Which didn't bring along a bunch of secondary stats. Like saves and THAC0; those look like level 1 stats. I also suspect his spellbook capacity, though obviously there isn't enough information on that screen to prove it.

The stats I mentioned above will correct themselves the next time he levels up, which should be soon. But it gets worse. I also suspect he's missing thief skill points (175 of them from thief levels 2 through 8), a proficiency dot (thief level 5), and an instance of Set Snare (thief level 6). And those won't automatically correct themselves.

Recommendation: go back to that save with him at level 1. Add in the experience, but level him up in-game. You can tweak the HP after he's done leveling if you want to match the original that exactly.

It seems I have the same problem with Anomen as well. Jaheira, Minsc, Imoen, Yoshimo and Aerie levelled up no issue in game when I got them.

I have the save with Jan in the party, he is lvl 0. I do not know how to bring up the console though and how to add the XP. I have added the specific line needed in the baldur.lua, but the console does not come up with ctrl-space. Any tips?
