Kharlindale Realms has been around in one form or another since well before the Enhanced Edition of NWN was released. It is a very stable server which requires no downloads to play yet still provides a challenge, even for the veteran gamers who play there regularly.
Legendary Levels have been implemented through scripting, allowing your character to improve up to level 60, and there is a regular Sunday night (USA time) team event for all characters which have achieved at least level 40.
Although the opening couple of missions are easy enough for even a poorly equipped level 1 character to get through, the higher (40+) level missions are deliberately designed to be difficult enough to make cooperation the only realistic way to advance through the story line. The regular players are friendly and helpful with both advice and starter equipment, if you want either.
This is a no-roleplay and no-PvP server, with deliberate attempts at PKing being a fast route to a permanent ban. The focus is strongly on cooperating with other players, not competing with them.
The server is still updated from time to time although updates happen infrequently and only after careful consideration in order to preserve server balance. This is one of the best balanced servers in existence, although admittedly not without its faults (like all servers). Over-all, though, the server is very well balanced in respect of challenge, progression and rewards.
Extensive customising of some items of your own equipment is a feature of this server, as is the ability to use "maps" to search for "buried treasure", which is the only source of some desirable - although not essential - items.
Some of the formerly less desirable weapon types in NWN have been made useful by scripting, usually linked to a class or a prestige class. For example, in Kharlindale Realms, it's possible to make the humble shuriken into a truly deadly weapon.
Kharlindale has a web forum at https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/brunderencitadel/ from which you can obtain some maps, information on customisation of equipment and general help.
General advice for new players:
* Choose the correct starting point for your character's class, because there will be a NPC somewhere in that starting area who will give you a bonus item for your class to help you get started. The class item can also be upgraded at level 5 and every 5 levels (of that class) thereafter. The item is not upgraded for cross-class levels, to balance the benefits obtained by cross-class builds.
* Find the PC who gives you the starter missions. There will be 4 starter missions in each starting area. Although the missions are designed with that character class in mind, only the rogue missions require specialist skills so if you wish, you may do them all, in time.
* Your first new character will be restricted to +2 enhancement bonuses or +2 Armor Class bonuses at most until it reaches level 20. The restriction is increased to +3 at level 20, to +4 at level 27 and to +5 at level 33. This restriction carries over to any new characters you create on the server. Although +6 bonuses are available, items with this bonus are considered "Legendary" level items and so may only be equipped by a character of level 40 or above.
* Ask other players for help. You'll generally get it.
As one of the veteran players says, "this is my homeplace."
