Finger of Death Bug? Enemy Items DESINTEGRATE

Hello. Is Finger of Death supposed to desintegrate all items of an enemy when it dies? I mean, I tested it and if you kill someone with this spell, his items disappear. I don't think it's a normal behaviour of that spell because it's not Desintegrate, or Flesh to Stone.

I don't think It worked this way in the originals or in Baldur's, no idea about the EE versions...

Tested it again and yes, the items disappear. I guess this is a bug?

    “Finger of Death:
The Finger of Death spell snuffs out the victim's life force. The caster points his finger at the victim after the incantation is complete, effectively ripping the life out of its body unless a Save vs. Spell is made with a -2 penalty. A creature that successfully saves still receives 2d8+1 points of damage."

Theoretically speaking, it should only "snuff out" the life force. So, it shouldn't disintegrate (non-living) items. 😎

Practically, the Finger of Death is realized as a projectile with Slay effect on the target. Effects on items are not specified. 😼

It's weird yes, and it only happens in IWDEE, not in Baldur's. I have the last patch and everything.

By PnP rules, Finger of Death should not be destroying the enemy's items, no. If it's happening in IWDEE but not BG2EE, then it's most likely a bug.

    Finger of Death
    (Necromancy)

    Level: 7
Range: Visual range of the caster
    Duration: Instant
    Casting Time: 5
    Area of Effect: 1 creature
    Saving Throw: Special

The caster utters the Finger of Death incantation, points <PRO_HISHER> index finger at the creature to be slain, and unless the victim makes a Save vs. Spell, the victim dies instantly. Even if the save is successful, however, the brush with death still inflicts 2d8+1 points of magic damage. Characters slain by Finger of Death cannot be resurrected—they are gone forever.

finger of death in IWD is different than it is in the BG series, and always has been, the last sentence in the spell description is no doubt what causes the "disintegration effect"

    Hello.

Well, I have the original Icewind Dale 1 too, not only the EE version; I've tried there and Finger of Death does not disintegrate objects on the target victim. So it seems to be a change in EE, and not a very logical one.

I guess it is. I don't think they're going to change it anyway?

The problem is that it is no longer a spell that you can use then, because if you want the enemy's items, it is prohibited. I had this problem with the remorhaz in the Gloomfrost caverns, the one that's trapped in a pit and has that beautiful Blood of Kossuth amulet. It occurred to me to try Finger of Death just for fun on this remorhaz (it's not a spell I usually use)...

I had to load the game and kill him again to get the amulet.

It's not a big deal, but I was playing LoB no-reload, and I had to reload once for that s... xD

Luckily, it was my only reload on this run. I went ahead and finished the game without any more reloads, so all good I guess.

if you turn off the gore in the options menu it should make it so any creature that dies from a disintegration effect doesnt turn into sand and you should be able to salvage items that way

Well, or not use the finger of death anymore. The thing is, it still doesn't make sense for this spell to disintegrate equipment in the EE version when it didn't in the original game. It would make more sense for it to be caused by a cone of cold or acid spells, not a spell that literally drains the life from a living being, not objects.

If you turn off gore, can your characters still die permanently by strong hits, magic deaths or something? Because if I'm not mistaken, in Baldur's it was like that... You could avoid losing a team member if you disabled 'gore' (not fun).

I don't want to turn off gore if this avoids possible perma-deaths of my characters...

i dont remember if it does... i almost want to say it does make it so party members cant be chunked... but it has been years since that has happened and i have had gore turned off for a while...

actually, i will go quickly test it with that ogre south of friendly arm inn, he hits exceptionally hard for no reason...

yeah, if gore is turned off, looks like team mates cannot get chunked

I want my party members to be chunked 😆 I mean, I don't want to lose them, but the posibility has to be there.

I guess I will not use finger of death until it gets fixed (never I guess).

unzip this file and put it into your IWD override in your game directory and and should make it so FoD doesnt disintegrate anymore

Oh, thank you, so kind of you.

I don't know if it is possible to report the bug so it gets solved in future patches (if they come).
