How much hide in shadows and move silently is enough?

I’m trying a shadowdancer > fighter dual class out. I plan on dualling at thief 13, and I want to automatically hide any time I can.

I’m still in BG1 and I’ve poured all my points into these two skills only so far.

I’m wondering if I should just continue on and max these skills as much as possible, or if I’m better off putting some points in other skills, because I don’t want to waste points either.

That being said, I do plan on using another thief (Jan in BG2) for all my locks, traps, trap setting and dispelling illusions. So I should have everything covered.

TIA.

For a shadowdancer I would go for 150% in each stealth skill (including racial and class bonuses, although as human I guess no racial bonuses!) and then with items go higher. The Mercykiller ring comes to mind, or one of the stealth armors in BG2.

After that I would build up set traps, again thinking about the Mercykiller ring. I find about 85% is enough to reliably Set Traps without too much worry. Or you can build up Detect Illusion instead of Set Traps if you prefer.

As a dual it is not realistic to build out as a utility thief so leave that stuff to your 2nd thief. I would therefore focus first and foremost on reliably using stealth in all situations since it is the rationale for the kit. Then add one more skill, either Detect Illusions or Set Traps.

If you do not see the need for Set Traps or Detect Illusion since that will be Jan's forte, then take your stealth sills higher up towards 200 for each one.

I tested a Shadowdancer in ToB recently and already with 100%, it hided virtually all the time. 😎
