My companions are all Feebleminded

.....I have gone through Bg 1 and Bg 2 several times, and am now doing an all-evil runthrough of Throne of Bhaal. Now, I have always known that in combat, even with the AI turned on, I have to check after every combat round to make sure nobody is doing anything stupid. One of my rules is to never, ever give a mage a dagger or a quaterstaff. Left to their own devices, a mage with a dagger will gleefully run up to a fire giant and try to stab it to death. So, I give them all slings darts instead for their secondary attack mode.
.....Thieves are sort of similar. They rarely have the HP or THACO to go to-to-toe with an enemy. They all get shortbows and a slew of arrows for their primary atack form. Yeah, I give them all melee weapons just in case, but the opportunity for a backstab rarely arises. Well, at least until Throne of Bhaal, when you can give them the assassinate ability. But that's relatively late in the campaign.
.....Usually I don't have to micromanage group movements when not in combat, unless I am searching for traps. Then I found an exception while navigating Yaga-Shura's damned lair. If I direct my group to go from point A to point B and there is a lava pool in the way, they will stupidly run through it, taking damage and shouting in pain all he way. Come on guys! It's not like they are concealed traps, they are conspicuously huge pools of flaming lava! I have to micro manage their moves: go a few feet here, go a few feet there, and circle around those wretched pools. How tedious!
