Is it possible to Purchase a New CD Key for an Old Install

A while back I had NWN EE Installed on a PC and a Laptop with the same CD key, since I didn't use them at the same time.
I am going to give the laptop to my son, and would like to get him a different CD key so we can play together.
Do I need to uninstall the game and reinstall it to get a new CD key, or can I just purchase the Key and replace it in the CDKey file?
