Baldurs Gate 2 EE - Legacy of Bhaal impossible?

i tried a solo assassin thief, and... those mephits are impossible to hit - i can only score a hit if its a critical. backstab also always misses, snares have no effect, they dont trigger. i know its the hardest difficulty, but that impossible?

btw, i hit a pretty big total roll for abilities and i had 18 str, 18 dex, 16 const.

    hmm i started anew with more points in hide in shadows and 1 weapon style. now theres a glimmer of hope... i still need to hit at least 17 or so on the d20 to hit a goblin..
