Baeloth 1000 gold ?

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
Never noticed before that when recruit Baeloth the party gains 1000 gold. Does he give the gold or what happens ?

    CRE files have a field for how much gold they have. For monsters, they drop that gold when they die. For joinable NPCs, that gold is added to the party pool when they join. Lots of NPCs have a bit of gold. Baeloth has more, but he's also locked behind a minimum XP requirement.

    Baeloth's gear, particularly his archmage robe, is worth a lot more than that. But you can't sell it easily, because it's all flagged as stolen. (The fences in the BG1 campaign: Erdane, Silence, Black Lily)
