Location of save files on MAC? Game lost...

I installed BGEE and didn't like it so decided to start with BG2. When I uninstalled BGEE something seems to have gone wrong. Loads of files ended up in the trash obviously, and then when I went to play IWDEE there are no saved games to load! Clearly the saves got deleted.
So I rescued them with "put back" and they are now still clearly there, but when I open IWDEE (I am on Steam), they do not come up.
I am guessing what happened is that because everything gets wrapped up and called BG, somewhere along the line there is a folder missing that those saves ought to be in but it's no longer there. I've even tried "put back" everything, but the uninstall has obviously messed something up.
Can anyone tell me please where I should put those save folders so I can access them again? Alternatively, Steam tells me that they have cloud saves, but I have no idea how to access and download those.
UPDATE the save files seem to be in the right place, but if I go into the game, the only "load game" I have is an old one... not the more recent ones (or previous ones)......
