paladin/ranger magic

paladins and rangers have extremely low caster levels, their spells will be dispelled whenever enemy mage sneezes. i would like to know from experienced players if paladin/ranger magic will have any use in serious fights (SCS - insane)

I'd lean towards buffs over offensive spells with these guys. Armor of faith absolutely has uses. Always good to have a remove fear casting on a party member imo. Chant is fine. Offensive, but silence is good. Hold person is strong. Someone with an extra remove invisibility is always good, just like remove fear.

Barkskin is likely highly underrated by many players for a ranger. If you're using stealth all the time on your ranger, and you should be, it's a great opening action to take during combat.

These can be dispelled sure, but not every fight has mages, even on SCS.

Armor of Faith alone makes Paladins and Rangers into better tanks than Fighters, especially in the latter part of the saga.
Only the Berserker kit from Fighter can keep up with (and surpass) Rangers and Paladins.

Wizard Slayer and Kensai definitely has their uses, but that's more often than not in a Dual Class combination.

If I had to choose in a SCS - insane game, it would be difficult to choose between a Berserker and Cavalier.. If i needed saves, someone to wield carsomyr and extremely high physical damage resistance, it'd be the Cavalier.. if I needed a "win" button, it'd be Berserker for their immunity to nearly all of the most devastating spells.

In my opinion, Korgan and Jaheira are the two best "traditional" tanks in the game.. and somewhere inbetween you could fit a Cavalier.
Minsc, despite being a ranger, has too many drawbacks to be a great traditional meatshield. Not great Constitution, very bad intelligence (mind flayers).. he's a decent #3

Keldorn is absolutely fantastic, but i see him as a more offensive/anti-mage than meatshield.. no armor of faith!

my main concern is dispel-resistance. will they get dispelled by majority of mages or not

Yes, but it's the same for potions. Mages don't use dispel magic so often.

Nobody seems to be mentioning Insect Plague. This can affect an entire room full of enemies.

I wouldn't worry too much about being dispelled.. most meatshield kind of tanking (vs fire giants for example), then being dispelled isn't gonna happen.. and when fighting mages, if you have your physical damage mitigation like Armor of Faith.. it won't really do you much good in those fights anyway.

I guess there are a small handfull of fights where you will meet a very powerfull caster at the same time as very damaging melee opponents, but those are few and far between.

Paladins and rangers can't cast Insects Plague.

Nobody's mentioning Insect Plague because you can't cast it as a paladin or ranger. You'll never have any level 5 spell slots. (BG series standard rules, single-class)

maybe he wanted to say "Summon Insects"

The single target third level insect spell is decent. its main issue is the casting time. It eats up basically the whole round. And, since it also does physical damage, you're usually better off swinging your weapon instead. It has niche uses relative to your weapon attack.

I don't think so since he talked about a "full room of monsters".
