Importing custom character into SoU

I know that the beginning of SoU makes sure you start with a new level 1 character. Many years ago, I was able to go through the first 5 mins of the game and then import a custom character, console in the items they should have at the beginning, and play SoU with this custom character. The issue is that I forgot how to do this. Can someone post the instructions? TIA!

    You can just make the character and give them the items than start the game with that character. It doesn't do anything to XP or existing items.

    Really?!
    I thought there was something weird I had to do to get it working. Maybe that was HotU...? Now I'm not sure.

    Yes. As part of the story in HotU you need more levels and your items play a key part. If you start that one at level 1, it will give you 15, but if you start at a higher level, like 2, it won't trigger it—at least that's happened to me quite a long time ago. They could have fixed it.
