I still haven't found one---I tried to play the black pit with the idea of importing the +2 katana there into the game, but found out I can't import from the Black Pits into BG1EE. Looking for an answer to this as well.

You can't? I just did it last night, what were you doing to import?
I have the same problem, but where can you FIND one?? Heard you could find one on the bodies of the baddies waylaying dorn, but they are only wakizashi's...:(
Whatever you want to call it (cheating?) but I just gave my Kensai two regular Katanas to start with. Still rolling with them and it's fine and all but when they say "Warning: Katanas are rare" they really do mean that. I wish there was more added to the game-- seeing how popular they are and how often people post about them.
Each katana is a masterwork from the distant land of Kara-Tur. They're not supposed to be a simple commodity that you can just go shopping for. This is why the game warns you that they're rare. Yes, it's not a very helpful answer, but the answer has been given at least 20 times on this forum, including above.

Yeah pretty much. I think they should of been a bit cheaper and easy to purchase right out the gate. I gave my Stalker 2 proficiency pts in Longsword and 2 in Katanas and I never used a Katana even once. By the time you find the +1 Katana I already had the Dagger of venom+2 and Varscona +2, and my next proficiency slot went into Dagger
Just cause I'm interested... with 18 charmisma from Winthrop at Candlekeep level 1
Katana is 710 gold. Next expensive melee weapon is the Two handed sword and the Wakizashi at 71 gold

crazy
Yeah, unless they add more Katanas into the game, Its better to just go for Bastard Swords or Long Swords IMO. BGII:EE will probably sing a different tune but we gonna have to wait for that :P
Figured that logically if Candlekeep can sell them but the Thunderhammer Smithy in Beregost doesn't even have ONE available... then something just feels wrong. I honestly don't feel like it ruined my game-- seeing as you kinda feel a bit weak as a Kensai to start with (In BG1).
I'm personally waiting for a mod which'll remove Katanas, wakiza-... All curved swords except for Scimitars.
What do you do with an cut cut sword against a guy in full plate? Same could be said for Scimitars of course. Always feel poor about D&D not implementing the fact of damage types properly (example: longswords should be more along cut/pierce/hack[half blunt, half cut? Same for Two Handed Swords)
But then again, this must be forgiven. D&D from my POV is more an RPG than a tactical combat simulation.

Furthermore, with any character you can theoretically pick off guards and sell their plate mail until you get the gold required to buy a Katana.

Just thought it was worth watching, the commentary is a little annoying though.
But very interesting indeed.
EDIT: Oh good Lord. Is this gunnery sergeant Hartman? AKA Lee Ermey?
