Cannot start new game

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
I just installed BG:EE from Steam. I can launch the game and run the tutorial, but once I completed the tutorial, I cannot actually start a new game. It gets stuck in character creation -- I cannot "accept" any characters, whether I load from a file or generate on the fly. I can go through the entire creation sequence (or load a file), but the "Accept" button is greyed out, so I can only cancel.

Not very useful game if I can't actually play it beyond the tutorial. Any ideas?

    I have already verified files, turned off hardware mouse acceleration, and tried running in full screen and windowed modes. In all cases, the tutorial works, but creating a new single-player game does not.

    Got it to work after a few driver updates and a reboot.
