wow i suck

So I am totally brand spanking new to DnD and BG. I am looking around, and moved onto Friendly Arm inn to meet my friends. Imoen is with me, and we get ganked by some mage that casts clones outside the inn.

Sonofa!

    I advise picking up either some other party members, or do some traveling to find some equipment, heading straight to that mage without being able to distrupt mirror image is a death sentence :P especially if all you have with you is imoen.

    Another tip: Make sure to engage him in the daytime, and preferably when there are some guards around. They fill him full of arrows. At the very least, it tends to shred his mirror images and he's largely a joke after that.

    That fight is a little easier if you have 3'or 4 party members, have used ranged weapons too

    He's a right pain in the butt. If you find a cleric she can cast Command on him and you can kick him right in the Voonerables. There's one available fairly easily if you have about 200gp .

    If you want instructions, ask. I can't figure out how to get the spoiler box to work XD

    @CaptRory: Type {spoiler}thing you want to hide{/spoiler} but with [] instead of {}

    yeah thse guys can be a great help...but try to get the final blow in if you can, so you get credit for the kill, and not those greedy xp-craving npcs!

    @sandmanCCL Thanks!

    Go South. Buy a Stone to Flesh Scroll at a temple and go to the Carnival. Branwen has been turned to stone. Put the scroll in your Item Quickslot Bar and use it on her. Talk to her and she'll join you out of thanks for freeing her. If you buy the scroll at the Carnival it costs 500gp, so it's much cheaper to bring one with you.

    You know...that mage at the inn has killed a lot of Baldur's Gate n00bs. When I played it in 1998...I remember distinctly feeling that it was the first game that I had ever played where I felt a foreboding sense of danger. Because from the beginning, people want you dead. Lots of people. And the fact that they hold in their hands documents that have instructed them to kill you makes it even worse.

    And these people are "good" at what they do. It makes the game difficult, but also very rewarding when you finally survive and continue on your way. Baldur's Gate developed a great atmosphere from the very beginning, and sadly, few are the games that have employed such an effect.

    BG is also a very harsh game world, it's kill or be killed. I wonder how all those village children survive to adulthood?
  • MajocaMajoca Member Posts: 263
    @Space_hamster, That's the thing, they don't... that's why cities have like less than 10 people. Candle Keep is virtually empty, if you look at its size :P

    @Majoca

    Yeah...there are a lot of empty buildings. It's kinda funny how assassins just tend to hang out in them, you know?
  • MajocaMajoca Member Posts: 263
    @darthchair, gets to the point where you just have to suspect everyone is either a doppleganger or will talk to you and trigger an event where you will instantly die because of no preparation.

    I think Baldur's Gate 3 is going to be about your character waking up after the events in Throne of Bhaal and discovering it was all a dream. You step out of the house you share with Gorion in Candlekeep and are suddenly given 150 gold coins and told to prepare for a journey and be quick about it.

    Oh no...not again, you mutter. And the rest of the game is about avoiding everyone and living your life as a hermit.

    Don't know if it was mentioned but you can pick up a crazed theif and loony mage on the first map and don't worry about getting rid of them that will dealt with later in the game

    Or just have Immy BS him with that +1 dagger (requires 18 charisma or the ability to pickpocket to get though), while you throw darts at him (earliest weapon to have 3 attack with)...she'll 1 shot him on a crit.

    i killed him with a level 1 transmuter and imoen..

    imoen tanked him. i threw magic missile before fight started, then burning hands... guard and sling did the rest..

    He did kill me on my first try though.. just saying it can be done with 2 level 1s
  • gesellegeselle Member Posts: 325
    Imoen's wand helps you interrupting his mirror images. After that he should fall pretty quickly.

    Hmm I had no problems against him with my wild mage and Imoen...Then again everyone else on the map died as well including Imoen he he he. Got a wild surge and managed to summon a Nabassu and luckily had protection from evil up so cast it on myself and it ran around killing and causeing mayham the usuall demon stuff.

    But yeah instantly attacking him with a magic spell to interupt his mirror images usually makes or brakes the fight on lvl 1
  • ZanathKariashiZanathKariashi Member Posts: 2,869
    Yeah, that's why I love wild mages...take that final boss, I just summoned a balor immune to all your (and my) weapons...good thing that crappy pally I brought has a ton of Prot from evil castings.

    @tobajas How did you get protected from evil if all you had was your wild mage and Imoen? Oo

    Lol this was all that made winning that fight possible for me

    @Zanian protection from evil is also a level one mage spell.

    As stygga mentioned the spell is a lvl 1 spell and since I knew alot of the early hard enemies are Evil it helps alot and so I like it alot on early lvls I had chosen, Protection from Evil, Chromatic orb (prefer this spell to magic missle early on since it has almost the same dmg but an added effect aswell) and of course wild surge.

    Charm in my opinion is the most powerful lvl 1 spell to pick since it quite often works on the early enemies and you basicly get an extra team mate.

    PS if you can cast friends (also a lvl 1 mage spell) on yourself before buying or selling anything since it gives you better prices.

    I actually feel that sleep is the most powerful spell at level 1 by far. It's more useful against large numbers of course, but kobolds, gnolls, hobgoblins etc are pushovers with that spell
