Thief stronghold question

.....I had taken over the thief guild from Mae'Var. I forget how I lost control, but I went tp Renal Bloodscalp and paid a fine to get reinstated. My uderstanding is that this is a one-time thing.
.....I am now in the process of doing the Planar Sphere mission. This is a long and complicated mission, and we are only about half-way through it. The Sphere is sealed, and we can only return by completing the mission. Well, I just now got a message that Renal was waiting for my usual tribute. (How he got the message to me I have no idea!).
.....So, my question is, will I lose control of the Guild yet again, or does the game take the fact that it is impossible for me to pay up into consideration?

Note: As usual, the AI is an unreliable source of information. I get two contradictory answers, depending on how exactly I phrase the question, and how deep into AI mode I go.
I guess I will find out after we finish the mission. All we need now is a demon's heart, and to fight a bunch of supporting dweebs, plus a ticked off wizard. Easy peasy!
