Automatically Switch to Melee Weapons?

It's been a looong time since I've played Baldur's Gate (played when it first came out), and was very happy to find that it has been fixed, added to, and vastly improved upon.

I'm confused about one of the AI settings, "Prefer Ranged Weapons". From what I could find elsewhere on the net, with said script activated, the character would use ranged weapons until the target got close enough for melee weapons, at which point the character would automatically switch.

If this is wrong, I'll deal with switching manually. But if correct, what am I doing wrong? Because it's not working for me.

All of those player character scripts have "if I'm not already doing something" conditions on what they do. That includes both orders you give and orders the script gives them (like "attack an enemy for a round"). So, yes, the script in "prefer ranged" mode will switch to a melee weapon when an enemy is close and to a ranged weapon if no enemy is close. As long as the character isn't busy, anyway. Delays will happen.

Oh, and one more detail. For this to work, you need a ranged weapon in one quickslot and a melee weapon in another. It can't grab something out of your inventory.

I'll give the crusty old man answer, the correct setting for the AI is ALWAYS OFF. Never ask the computer to do something you can do just as well yourself.
That's like buying a Corvette with an automatic transmission. Some things are just *wrong*.
