Multiplayer Game Connection Issues (2.7.3.0)

Hi all! My brother and I have been working slowly through BG1:EE together. Last play date was earlier this summer, 9th of July (so it was working after the latest update). Between then and now, something's stopped working, and we're out of ideas. We're on the same game version: 2.7.3.0 non-SOD Steam copies, all files validated.
The basic problem: he usually hosts and keeps the saves. Trying today though, I would enter the multiplayer game, wait for awhile without ever seeing characters in the party management screen, and eventually get booted back out as though the session had been terminated--even though he was still running the server.
We tried starting a new game, and I can host just fine for him, with things working normally. So he sent over the save file, and we loaded it up with me as server player instead. Whatever the original issue was, that solved it, and we could play as normal.
But, it means that I now have unalterable control over his protagonist character, which I can't hand back over to him. This is his first experience with the series, and I'd really like to keep him in the driver's seat for all the Bhaalspawn developments.
That's everything we know so far. (He's also moved to a different country now, in case that somehow affects things.) Any ideas? I'd take advice for fixing the original connection issues; or advice for switching which party member is the Bhaalspawn. Anything that lets us continue this run with him as protagonist.
